About Drew Vernon Moravec

As a boy, I was an artist before I even knew what an artist was. I was simply a kid who loved to draw. By the time I entered high school, I had already developed a reputation as an artist, and art classes gave me the opportunity to take that instinct more seriously and begin developing my skills.

I went on to college, where I studied a variety of artistic disciplines and learned about the history, techniques, and traditions behind them. That foundation eventually led me into a much more unconventional education: years of traveling and experiencing different places, people, and ways of life. I worked small jobs, lived with little money in small apartments, and often kept to myself. It was a restless, wandering period of my life, but one that had a lasting influence on how I see the world and, ultimately, how I make art.

Eventually, my travels took me overseas to Germany, Italy, and France. I spent much of my time in museums, standing in front of the paintings and sculptures I had previously known only through books and art history classes. Seeing those works in person gave me a deeper understanding of art, craftsmanship, materials, and the long tradition I was becoming a part of.

All of these experiences—the places I’ve lived, the people I’ve encountered, the years of wandering, and the art I’ve studied—have found their way into what I create. My work continues to move between disciplines, from oil painting and stone carving to metal sculpture and murals, with each medium offering a different way to explore an idea.

Eventually, I settled in St. Louis, Missouri. After years of moving around, I finally found a place with enough calm and stability to focus on creating. Today, I work as a St. Louis artist and sculptor through Studio Checkmark, creating original paintings, stone and metal sculpture, murals, and commissioned artwork.

The work continues to evolve, but the impulse behind it remains much the same as it was when I was a boy: I simply love to make art.
